You've probably noticed that every yoga class starts with a short chant invoking the teachings of Patañjali, the author the classical Yoga Sūtras.
This workshop is a meditative exploration of some of the key concepts of this seminal yogic text. The first of its four chapters offers us rich techniques in an advanced practice of traditional yoga.
We will discuss various tools as described by Patañjali: Abhyāsa (practice), Vairāgya (non-attachment), Śraddha (faith) and Īśvara Praṇidhāna (trustful surrender). In addition, we will also explore the definition of Yoga through traditional call and response chanting. This allows students to learn ancient texts without distortion and also touches the spirit in a profound way.
The session will end with a guided meditative practice from the Krishnamacharya tradition that Shantala received from her teacher Radha Sundararajan (former head of Vedic chant division of Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram).
Shantala- from Bangalore, India- is a certified Vedic chant teacher who aims to make this practice accessible to an international audience. She grew up with Sanskrit chanting, script, grammar and scriptures as part of her family tradition. This knowledge was passed down to her by her mother, Saroja, who taught regular classes in their home for over 30 years. Shantala also is a student of Saraswathi, daughter of Pattabhi Jois.
